The Northern Lights (AKA: Aurora Borealis)

The Northern Lights occur between 62-70° in the Northern and Southern latitudes.
VAGUE INTRO TO GEO-MAGNETICS:
All things or particles (any small or large mass or substance) have magnetic fields. All things are magnets, to some extent.

The Earth has a magnetic field with a North Magnetic Pole that lies at approximately 83° N. The smallest particle of oxygen (O2) up in the sky also has an infinitely smaller magnetic field with a magnetic North and South.

The Earth's larger (and stronger) magnetic field pulls on all particles that also have magnetic fields; this causes charged particles up in the air to collide. The resulting collisions cause tiny explosions that can collectively be viewed at night (when most other light is absent). We call the natural phenomenon of these collective explosions: The Northern Lights (or, the Aurora Borealis).

  1. What a beautiful photo of you and your Mom with the lights behind you! I find it fascinating about the magnetic properties of the world and am reminded of how we are all connected.Thank you for connecting me to this brilliant phenomonen.I havn't seen a really great northern light show since the summer Kay and Florian visited us on Gunfint Lake in the BWCA. The boys were only about 7 and 12 yrs. old. The place down the road let us rent their pontoon for the day. It had a second deck on top. We took it out at night and floated in the middle of Gunflint lake and just watched the show. There was a huge dome of bright light in the center of the sky with streaks of colored light shooting thru the dome. We later found out it was a very rare occurance. You maybe saw the photos where Kay is wearing the paper bag on her head as a hat. That was the time.
Missing you and happy to see a piece of your world.
    lovingly,Auntie bonnie
